Border Security Response
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.

International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has registered in excess of numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that such operations become unprofitable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
