Faulty Line Caused Portuguese Capital Inclined Railway Crash, Inquiry Reveals

The tragic funicular incident in Portugal's capital that cost 16 people in the start of the ninth month was attributed to a faulty cable, per the official investigation issued on the start of the week.

The investigation has advised that the city's similar cable cars be kept halted until their operational integrity can be fully verified.

Details of the Tragic Incident

The crash took place when the historic Glória funicular derailed and collided into a edifice, shocking the city and highlighting grave worries about the safety of historic tourist attractions.

Portugal's transport safety authority (GPIAAF) noted that a cable linking two cars had detached just before the crash on September 3rd.

Preliminary Results

This initial report stated that the cable was not up to the mandatory standards established by the city's public transport company.

This wire did not comply with the standards in force to be employed for the Glória tram.

The 35-page analysis also recommended that other funiculars in the capital must be kept out of service until inspectors can ensure they have sufficient stopping mechanisms designed of immobilising the cabins in the scenario of a line snap.

Victims and Injuries

Among the sixteen casualties, 11 were foreign nationals, including 3 UK citizens, 2 citizens of South Korea, 2 Canadian nationals, a Frenchwoman, a Swiss, an US national, and a Ukrainian.

The accident also harmed approximately 20 individuals, among them 3 UK nationals.

Among the Portuguese victims comprised four employees from the identical social care institution, whose workplace are positioned at the peak of the sharp alley serviced by the cable car.

Operational Context

The Elevador da Glória began operation in 1885, employing a system of counterweights to move its 2 wagons along its 870-foot path climbing and descending a sharp incline.

Based on authorities, a regular examination on the morning of the incident detected nothing unusual with the line that later snapped.

This experts also noted that the conductor had activated the cable car's stopping mechanism, but they were unable to halt the carriage without the support of the balancing mechanism.

This entire event unfolded in just 50 seconds, as stated by the investigation.

Future Measures

The investigative body is scheduled to publish a final report with operational guidelines within the next year, though an intermediary document may deliver more updates on the development of the investigation.
