‘It seems like sorcery’: is light therapy truly capable of improving your skin, whitening your teeth, and strengthening your joints?

Light therapy is definitely experiencing a moment. There are now available glowing gadgets for everything from dermatological concerns and fine lines to muscle pain and oral inflammation, recently introduced is an oral care tool outfitted with tiny red LEDs, promoted by the creators as “a significant discovery for domestic dental hygiene.” Globally, the industry reached $1 billion in 2024 and is forecast to expand to $1.8 billion by 2035. You can even go and sit in an infrared sauna, which use infrared light to warm the body directly, the thermal energy targets your tissues immediately. As claimed by enthusiasts, it feels similar to a full-body light therapy session, boosting skin collagen, easing muscle tension, alleviating inflammatory responses and chronic health conditions as well as supporting brain health.

Research and Reservations

“It feels almost magical,” notes Paul Chazot, professor in neuroscience at Durham University and a convert to the value of light therapy. Certainly, certain impacts of light on human physiology are proven. Sunlight helps us make vitamin D, crucial for strong bones, immune defense, and tissue repair. Light exposure controls our sleep-wake cycles, too, triggering the release of neurochemicals and hormones while we are awake, and winding down bodily functions for sleep as it fades into night. Sunlight-imitating lamps are standard treatment for winter mood disorders to elevate spirits during colder months. So there’s no doubt we need light energy to function well.

Types of Light Therapy

Although mood lamps generally utilize blue-spectrum frequencies, the majority of phototherapy tools use red or near-infrared wavelengths. In rigorous scientific studies, such as Chazot’s investigations into the effects of infrared on brain cells, identifying the optimal wavelength is crucial. Photons represent electromagnetic waves, spanning from low-energy radio waves to short-wavelength gamma rays. Light-based treatment employs mid-spectrum wavelengths, including invisible ultraviolet radiation, followed by visible light encompassing rainbow colors and then infrared (which we can see with night-vision goggles).

Dermatologists have utilized UV therapy for extensive periods for addressing long-term dermatological issues like vitiligo. It modulates intracellular immune mechanisms, “and dampens down inflammation,” notes a dermatology expert. “There’s lots of evidence for phototherapy.” UVA penetrates skin more deeply than UVB, in contrast to LEDs in commercial products (typically emitting red, infrared or blue wavelengths) “generally affect surface layers.”

Safety Considerations and Medical Oversight

The side-effects of UVB exposure, including sunburn or skin darkening, are recognized but medical equipment uses controlled narrow-band delivery – meaning smaller wavelengths – which decreases danger. “It’s supervised by a healthcare professional, so the dosage is monitored,” explains the dermatologist. And crucially, the lightbulbs are calibrated by medical technicians, “to guarantee appropriate wavelength emission – unlike in tanning salons, where oversight might be limited, and emission spectra aren’t confirmed.”

Home Devices and Scientific Uncertainty

Red and blue light sources, he notes, “don’t have strong medical applications, but they may help with certain conditions.” Red wavelength therapy, proponents claim, improve circulatory function, oxygen uptake and dermal rejuvenation, and promote collagen synthesis – an important goal for anti-aging. “The evidence is there,” comments the expert. “However, it’s limited.” In any case, given the plethora of available tools, “we don’t know whether or not the lights emitted are reflective of the research that has been done. Appropriate exposure periods aren’t established, proper positioning requirements, if benefits outweigh potential risks. Numerous concerns persist.”

Treatment Areas and Specialist Views

Early blue-light applications focused on skin microbes, bacteria linked to pimples. Scientific backing remains inadequate for regular prescription – even though, explains the specialist, “it’s often seen in medical spas or aesthetics practices.” Individuals include it in their skincare practices, he mentions, though when purchasing home devices, “we just tell them to try it carefully and to make sure it has been assessed for safety. Without proper medical classification, oversight remains ambiguous.”

Innovative Investigations and Molecular Effects

Simultaneously, in advanced research areas, Chazot has been experimenting with brain cells, discovering multiple mechanisms for infrared’s cellular benefits. “Virtually all experiments with specific wavelengths showed beneficial and safeguarding effects,” he reports. The numerous reported benefits have generated doubt regarding phototherapy – that results appear unrealistic. However, scientific investigation has altered his perspective.

Chazot mostly works on developing drug treatments for neurodegenerative diseases, but over 20 years ago, a GP who was developing an antiviral light treatment for cold sores sought his expertise as a biologist. “He designed tools for biological testing,” he explains. “I was pretty sceptical. This particular frequency was around 1070 nanometers, that nobody believed did anything biological.”

What it did have going for it, nevertheless, was its ability to transmit through aqueous environments, meaning it could penetrate the body more deeply.

Mitochondrial Effects and Brain Health

Additional research indicated infrared affected cellular mitochondria. Mitochondria are the powerhouses of cells, producing fuel for biological processes. “Mitochondria exist throughout the body, including the brain,” explains the neuroscientist, who, as a neuroscientist, decided to focus the research on brain cells. “Research confirms improved brain blood flow with phototherapy, which is generally advantageous.”

With 1070 treatment, energy organelles generate minimal reactive oxygen compounds. At controlled levels these compounds, explains the expert, “triggers guardian proteins that maintain organelle health, preserve cell function and eliminate damaged proteins.”

Such mechanisms indicate hope for cognitive disorders: antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and cellular cleanup – self-digestion mechanisms eliminating harmful elements.

Ongoing Study Progress and Specialist Evaluations

The last time Chazot checked the literature on using the 1070 wavelength on human dementia patients, he reports, about 400 people were taking part in four studies, including his own initial clinical trials in the US
